So we thought we had summer lettuce production figured out. Why did we think this? Mostly because for the past 6 years, we’ve had plenty of lettuce at market, nearly each week for the entire summer. In fact, last season we had too much lettuce during the summer and didn’t sell it all so this […]
That is what I have been the past couple months. I have been having a rough time setting aside time to update our journal. Probably because there is so much work to do outdoors that I find it difficult to prioritize indoor responsibilities such as keeping our journal updated. Well…. Our fields have been very […]
Thanks to our farm crew, Carl and I actually took off a few hours early Friday afternoon and left the crew to process all the veggies and they had the responsibility of getting everything ready for market. They did a GREAT job and we had EXCELLENT sales at market. WHY would we leave work early? […]
Can you believe that us farmers’ are thinking about fall just upon summers arrival? We are now beginning to seed our first succession of fall crops which includes broccoli, kale, collard greens and cabbage. We are seeding transplants so we are once again filling up our propagation greenhouse benches. This is GREAT news to us […]
We are pleased to have reached another small milestone, and that being, Alvin and Randy have begun grading the site where the Farm Vacation Cabin will be built. And the best part? The farm crew – mostly Danielle, Justin and Emily – have the crops looking exceptionally beautiful and pretty much weed free. We spent a lot of time weeding and hoeing the past couple weeks. Although for the past month we have […]
After reading an article in the Atlantic, about an excerpt from the book, “Greenhorns: 50 Dispatches from the New Farmers’ Movement”, I must say I love our CSA members and tailgate market customers. I believe that both our CSA and tailgate market customers understand the amount of work that goes into producing their food and […]
This love affair of mine has been going on a couple months now, ever since early February when I was sawing black locust for heating our greenhouses, and I must say it is still going strong. For you readers to understand this love affair you must know a little about our saws and the wood […]
Eight years ago we completed installing an 8 foot high deer fence around 4 acres of our crop land, and after that project, we said we’d never build another such fence. The deer fence works incredibly well and requires little maintenance which we are thankful for but it was a lot of work to clear […]
