Lettuce: Red/Green Oakleaf Plants

These lettuce cultivars grow well in our climate.  You may harvest leaves off the plants for a few salads, but like all lettuce the plants will want to produce “seed” which farmers call bolting, after which you won’t get many leaves.   These lettuce bunches are from a read and green oakleaf variety Both types are compact heads with tender leaves that make a beautiful salad of red and green. This is an inexpensive version of our “Salad Mix”.

This balsamic vinaigrette, or if you are like us this buttermilk salad dressing or perhaps this lemon ginger tahini dressing is all the lettuce needs and it becomes a salad that satisfies our craving.
